About OS X

OS X, previously Mac OS X, is a series of operating systems developed and sold by Apple Inc. for their Macintosh computers. The "X" in OS X is the Roman numeral for ten.

Mac OS X first debuted in 1999 along with Mac OS X Server 1.0. It is based on NeXTSTEP, NeXT Computer's operating system, which in turn is based on the Mach kernel.
