imap is an Internet standard protocol for email clients that enables them to retrieve messages from an email server. Usually messages remain on the server until they are deliberately deleted by a client. Crucially, this means that multiple clients can manage the messages box on the server by, for instance, leaving some messages on the server until all, or more than one, client has taken the opportunity to read them.
