Youtube Center is one of the best as it integrates perfectly into the site and gives you a lot of other options to customize your viewing experience. It appends an extra set of options to each video including a download button, you can even only request audio.

I use the Fast Video Download for Firefox. If you come on a site that displays a video the icon starts flashing and you can select the video to be downloaded (in all its formats). Then you get a "Save As" dialog where you select the place it should go to.

I don't give you a standalone application, but the alternative one is web application. ClipConverter CC is allowing you to convert and download your Youtube video in the version what you like.
I hadn't tried it before using proxy services on my school. But, I hope it will work.

Freemake offer a Youtube converter to many different formats including mp3. Whilst I have never used it, I can vouch for their products as I have used both their Video Converter & Video Downloader with great success. Its a free download with no registration required.

mps-youtube is a console-based youtube player with playlist support. Doesn't display video, great for listening to music. It supports downloading media from youtube (although youtube-dl is much more full-featured regarding downloads).
You may also have a look at minitube which is a standalone (graphical) youtube player tring to match a TV-like experience.

It is a web-app rather than a desktop program.
