Simulation refers to software packages which model the outcomes of systems (discrete or continuous) with defined inputs, often useful when the intermediate states are non-deterministic or so complicated that exact detemination would be computationally expensive.

Simulation software models real world phenomena with judiciously chosen mathematical formulas that map defined inputs to outcomes, possibly incorporating randomly generated values. Models may involve discrete states, continuous states, or a mixture of both.
