Been having troubles with keeping multiple machines synchronized that run macOS 10.13, 10.14, 10.15 and Windows 10. I've decided to make the switch away from Photos.app since it's a bit too constrictive and Apple just keeps changing things around now at this point without maintaining enough universal functionality and breaking sync from time to time.

I'm wanting to come up with a way to synchronize between essentially any platform I choose, so I'm thinking a filesystem based option would be best for direct import.

At the end of the day I'd like a solid cohesive Library or Digital Asset Manager (DAM) that will handle both photos and videos inline for large collections (>4 TB).

Luminar 4 has seemed pretty interesting from reviews, but I don't think it really handles video previews like Photos.app.

Are there any DAMs that handle mostly like Photos.app while providing on-file-system management that would work well across platforms?

  • "handle mostly like Photos.app" – how does it handle, for those who never used it (or even heard about it)? Also, any price considerations? Pointer: How to ask for an alternative to some software (please list your requirements explicitly). – Izzy Apr 12 at 10:52
