I know of some sites that have this functionality, but it's inside the browser. Essentially I want to try this instead of a VCS (or maybe along with).

Why can't it be in the browser? I want to use the editor of my choice on the files. Also, I have code that needs to be built locally.

I'm thinking it needs to be centralized so that one person's changes will be automatically taken when other people come back to their files.

I see that a VCS can be too much to worry about when banging out a small program and just need everyone to always be on the same page.

What should I use? Feel free to point out why I'm doing it all wrong but that's not exactly helpful.

  • Note for others having trouble with acronyms: VCS == version control system. – martinstoeckli Jun 12 '19 at 6:41
  • "I want to use the editor of my choice on the files" : That means others will get your changes only when you save, not as you type. Is that OK? – Nicolas Raoul Jun 12 '19 at 7:33
  • Also, you will need an editor that automatically reloads files without asking, and can handle the conflicts that will certainly happen several times per minute. Do you have such an editor? – Nicolas Raoul Jun 12 '19 at 7:34
  • @NicolasRaoul Good points, I'll have to see if I can accomplish that. But, assuming that, do you have a suggestion? – Jack Strosahl Jun 12 '19 at 15:07
