I want to create a simple android app, to add markers on google map and to save data in the cloud. We are currently volunteers in a national park and we want to mark some animals.

So I want to create an Android app that does the following:

You can add a pin with the position of an animal via coordinates on google maps.

Google map screen with the different pins in different colours per animal. eg: zebra blue, giraffe red.

When you add the marker, also a db entry should be created with the following details:

  • User that created the mark, as in the owner of the android device
  • date & time
  • location
  • Animal Type
  • Animal ID
  • Animal Picture. The picture should be uploaded one time and then be able to be accessed by everybody. Eg a Lion with a visible scar on his face. So we can actually mark this specific lion then. The picture of the Lion would be only done by admin and should be able to changed by admin.

A report needs to be created on that db, so we can see on a daily/weekly base where specific animals have been found. Also marks on a map on daily/weekly base would be needed

So that's the scope and now the software questions, what are the best options to make this app/db/report. Money is a very big decision maker, as we are only 3 people and the work and software would be done/bought by us.

  • app: Is quite simple decision: Native + Google MAPS API.
  • DB is was thinking of google Firestore.
  • Reports no clue.

So any advice on which software parts i need to use or the "architecture" or specific parts of this project is very appreciated as this would be a first for any of us.

  • Your question is about the reporting part, right? Should the reports be a static file (for instance PDF) generated each day? Or a dynamic web UI with sliders etc? – Nicolas Raoul May 13 '19 at 10:38
  • No also about the database in the cloud. Is Google Firestore the best solution or is there another (cheaper, easier) option. Reports is really good questions, I think to begin with a PDF should be ok. But with time another dynamic web UI will be needed – Infected May 13 '19 at 10:43
  • Do you have Internet everywhere in the park? What should the app do when there is no Internet? Just display "Waiting for network" until Internet is back? – Nicolas Raoul May 13 '19 at 11:13
  • We have in most of the park internet but offline capabilities will be needed. – Infected May 14 '19 at 6:28
  • Will you need to display maps when offline? Are you open to any maps library, or do you have a particular reason to require Google Maps and not for instance OpenStreetMap? – Nicolas Raoul May 14 '19 at 8:03
