I am looking for a .NET library to create PDF e-books. This will be used in an MVC application. The libraries I reviewed seemed to be either too low-level (developer needs to layout individual elements, down to the exact X,Y coordinates on a page) or lacked the features I was looking for.

The book has a hierarchical organization, with chapters, sections, subsections etc numbered as follows: 1, 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.2, 2, ... We have a UI that allows users to edit individual pieces of the book. Each piece will be supplied to the PDF API in rich text HTML format and may contain embedded images.

Features needed:

  • Automatic generation of table of contents from the outline.
  • Automatic generation of an index at the end of the book. The keywords that need to be present in the index will be supplied as the book is being generated.
  • Support for margins, line spacing, internal links, headers and footers.

Features not needed:

  • PDF editing.
  • Merging, splitting, tagging.
