I need a software able to reduce the file size of a PDF. It must run under Windows 10.

In the past I used PDF Creator which worked very well, but the new version seems to have problems as printing to smaller DPI values actually increases the file size. Plus, it installs bloatware (PDF Architect) without authorization.

Requirements:

  • Installable software, not an online tool (for obvious privacy reasons)
  • Free to use
  • GUI

File Optimizer can, among many other file formats, losslessly compress PDF files without changing quality or affecting visual appearance.

Use NXPowerLite.

It is free and light, with a simple GUI. Also, you can use it offline.

I would assume that your files contain images - files with pure text would not be taking significant space. Unless you have strong preference for pdf format I would recommend converting them to cbz/cbr - basically image files packed into single archive, often used by comic books. It is much easier to process them further.

For files that contain image only CbrPdfConverter seems best. It seems to extract images without any processing and is very fast. Once you have cbr file you can reduce its size with CbxConverter (resizing and/or converting to WebP).

Second file type contains both images and text. Ideally I would be looking for tool that would be able to reduce images DPI but keep PDF structure but I haven't found any. Instead I'm rendering pages as images with ghostscript - it can be used from CbxConverter to render pdf and resize/convert images in single pass.
