I work in government and, I imagine like any large organization, we have a ton of processes that involve getting approvals from a chain of people in a particular order. Whether it's approving a document or approving a vacation/leave request.

Does anyone know a good web app that can provide this functionality? The closest I've found is kissflow, but it's completely tied to Google Apps, so we can't use it.

Ideally, it would be web-based and relatively modern

So you need it to be hosted? Or you want to host it yourself? – Nicolas Raoul May 1 '14 at 3:50
  • There are a few options JIRA has strong configurable workflow, and formflow is pretty handy, especially if you have SharePoint. If you can outline what it needs to interface with that would be helpful. – James May 1 '14 at 12:54

There are web-based workflow management systems out there but implementing one might be more complex a project and more expensive than you think so you should possibly consider setting down your specific requirements and then running a formal tender process - that's how government departments usually decide on software. – user16583 May 2 '14 at 15:07
